How to care for your socks so they last longer

You only get one chance to make a good first impression, and your socks say more about you than you might think. Just like you take care of other accessories like sneakers, you should take care of your socks.

There are many myths surrounding how to care for socks, with extremely complicated and ineffective advice. At Besocks we make it easy and bring you the definitive guide to give your socks the care they deserve.

From today, those unpleasant holes and wear on your favorite socks are over forever. With these tips you will be able to do it. If you think we left out any important ones, leave your comments at the end of the post.

Read manufacturing labels

The first tip is the most logical and necessary. As with any other garment, before washing it we must find out what fabric composition it is made of in order to use one washing program or another.

Socks are made from a wide variety of materials, with different qualities. The highest quality socks are always made from 100% organic combed cotton, like the ones you can find at Besocks.

Other cheaper materials such as nylon, acrylic or polyester are also used, which are much less durable, so you must be more careful with washing, because they will deteriorate faster than average.

To identify the type of fabric your sock is made of, look at the box or packaging, where, by law, brands and manufacturers must detail this information. Then choose a washing program accordingly.

Wash socks at 30 degrees or less

Another important point that also generates a lot of debate is the washing temperature. As we mentioned before, it will depend on the material they are made of, but it is important to choose the correct temperature.

Neither a temperature so high that it can cause deterioration, nor a temperature too low that prevents reaching the point of cleaning and disinfection that we need in a garment with so much exposure.

We recommend washing at a maximum temperature of 30 degrees to prevent them from losing their shape. This is the best way to avoid shrinkage and breakage of the fabric fibres, and is a high enough temperature to clean and disinfect.

Wash them inside out so that the design does not deteriorate.

Your socks deteriorate for 2 main reasons, the first is that you do not invest enough money in buying quality socks like the one you invest in other garments.

And the second thing that destroys your socks the most is not washing them inside out.
If we had to highlight one tip above all others, it would be to wash your socks inside out. With this simple action we prevent the outside of the sock, where the design is printed, from deteriorating as little as possible.

It's a trick that few people put into practice and that greatly extends the durability and aesthetics of your socks. From now on, turn them all inside out before putting them in the washing machine and you'll be sure that they come out in optimal condition.

Use low spin

Another small washing tip that is very effective in extending the life of your socks is to use programs with a low spin speed. A sock does not need high spin speeds to remove stains and dirt.

We recommend that you wash your socks separately from your clothes using a programme that does not exceed 600-800 rpm, to ensure that the rubbing and friction of high spin programmes will end up ruining your favourite sock.

Do not iron socks

Another post-wash mistake is ironing socks. This is not a good idea for several reasons. Some socks have fabrics like nylon or spandex and other synthetic fabrics that do not react well to ironing temperatures.

In most cases, they lose elasticity and comfort. The heat of the iron affects the elastic fibres and this causes the sock to lose its shape, which can be very uncomfortable. It also affects comfort, as they become stiffer and less comfortable.

Do not use bleaches or chlorine bleaches

Another common mistake is using very abrasive cleaning products such as bleaches or lye. These types of products are suitable for removing dirt from clothing, but they are not made for cleaning socks.

Just do one thing, make sure you use a quality detergent to wash your socks. Higher quality detergents have active ingredients that help remove stains and dirt without the need for harsh products.

Air dry

Another important point is drying. The key to prolonging the life of your socks is not to use a dryer. We are often in a hurry and end up choosing this option. We advise you not to do this under any circumstances. The best thing you can do is to dry them outdoors at room temperature.

Hang them evenly with clothespins and avoid direct contact with the sun, at least during the strongest hours of the day. That should be enough.

Avoid walking with socks only as much as possible

Most of the information we have found related to the topic, places a lot of emphasis on pre-washing, washing and post-washing, but for us, they forget an essential part that will make your socks last better.

And that thing is how you wear them. Simply going barefoot with socks on (without shoes on) can put excessive wear on the sole of the sock, causing it to gradually wear down.

Keep your nails short

Another aspect of use that can deteriorate the condition of your socks is the toenails. The hole in the toe sock appears for two reasons. The first is because the sock is of low quality. This will not happen to you with ours, take a look at the entire collection here.

The second reason why the dreaded hole always appears is because your nails are too long. Without a doubt, nails that are too long are the worst enemy of socks.

Don't force the sock: keep it in place

Socks, like any other garment, have a certain structure and shape. Wearing the wrong size can cause the sock to strain and give way in some places, especially around the heel.

Make sure you always choose your size range so that the sock stays in place.

Make sure that the heel counter matches your heel and does not wear it excessively high and stretched or you could damage the structure of the sock.

Now you have no excuse not to take care of your socks. Change your relationship with your socks by carrying out these tips for washing, wearing and maintaining them and extend the life of your favourite socks for much longer.
